What are Parabens, Phthalates and Sulfates? Why do most beauty products include these ingredients? Why does this matter and how do they harm your health? What do we use instead?

What are Parabens?

Parabens are preservatives used in most cosmetic products to increase shelve life. They prevent bacteria and mold growth. Products containing Parabens can last months to years. The biggest concern is that they disrupt hormones in you body.

The most commonly used parabens include:

  • Butylparaben
  • Isobutylparaben
  • Propylparaben
  • Methylparaben
  • Ethylparaben

Why are Parabens bad for you?

Parabens can act like the hormone estrogen in the body and disrupt the normal function of hormone systems affecting male and female reproductive system functioning, reproductive development, fertility and birth outcomes. Parabens can trigger irritation and allergic reactions in the skin, especially to sensitive, damaged, or broken skin. Studies show that parabens can be especially inflammatory to those with pre-existing conditions of psoriasis, eczema, or a pattern of contact dermatitis.

Does handmade soap need Paraben preservatives?

Cold process soap never needs preservatives. Our soaps have a pH level that doesn't allow mold or bacteria growth, making it safer to use than commercial soap. So we NEVER add Parabens to our soap recipes.

What are Phthalates?

Phthalates are a group of man-made chemicals used to make plastic more durable often added to personal care products like commercial soap to help lubricate other substances in the formula and to carry fragrances.

How harmful are Phthalates?

Phthalates as endocrine- disrupting chemicals are detrimental to the reproductive, neurological and development system, can damage the liver, kidneys, lungs, cause ADHD, breast cancer, obesity to name a few. Children are more vulnerable to Phthalates.

How are your soap bars Phthalate free?

We know your concerns about potential health effects so good news! All our natural oils and fragrances are free from Phthalates making it safe for you and your family's skin.

What are Sulfates?

Sulfates occur widely in everyday life, they are salts of sulfuric acid and many are prepared from that acid. They are used in commercial soaps to allow dirt and grime to be washed away from the skin easily. They produce a rich lather and intense cleaning action.

Why is Sulfate-free soap better?

Sulfates are basically detergents and with daily application on the skin often cause dryness, redness, itching and irritation. Although Sulfates are great at cleaning dirty buildup, they take away your skin's natural oils and proteins with time.

Does your handmade soap have Sulfates?

All our soap bars are base of vegetable oils and butters, non-toxic natural ingredients free from Sulfates, ensuring that your skin remains nourished and healthy while being gently cleansed and exfoliated.
